Reading by 9 is a program of L.A. Times Public Affairs to promote and support youth and family literacy. Every year, they create a free guide for parents and educators in partnership with a local literacy nonprofit. The guide includes age-appropriate book recommendations, suggestions for incorporating reading into daily life, and tips for reading with your child.
Ready, Set, Read is proud to be part of creating such a valuable resource. The guide is available in Spanish and in English. It can be downloaded or ordered by mail, all for free.
The guide includes articles by our Executive Director, Deb Burgin and Board Chair, Rieko Mendez, as well as tips from our Parent Educator, Devora Noboa.
About Reading by 9
Los Angeles Times Reading by 9 has worked to address the child literacy crisis in Southern California since 1998. By providing parents and educators with the necessary tools, it helps students in kindergarten through third grade learn to read — a crucial step toward future academic success.
Each year, The Times publishes its bilingual reading guide in partnership with childhood literacy organizations, which is distributed in English and Spanish to parents, educators, nonprofit organizations and libraries free of charge.
Past partners have included Access Books and Common Sense Media. The comprehensive guide features book recommendations, local literacy resources and tips for incorporating reading into a child’s daily life. Reading by 9 is also committed to furthering literature through educational programs. Donations to the Reading by 9 fund may be made through the California Community Foundation.
